Wimbledon Men’s Finals

Angie Hurdle was one of the lucky members to win Wimbledon tickets through the club ballot. Below is an account of the day she has kindly written for us.

Getting tickets for Wimbledon is not easy. Each year members of the LTA get entered into the ballot for tickets. I was lucky to have my ticket pulled out first, in the Tilford and Rushmoor Tennis Club Ballot, and was given the opportunity to purchase tickets for the Men’s Championship Final day.

Whilst waiting for the action to begin, we played “Spot the Royal or Celebrity’. This wasn’t too hard as we were close to the Royal Box.

With the ball boys and girls, offcials and umpire all in place, and Andy Murray and Milos Raonic on court, there was complete hush amongst the 15,000 spectators as the game began. We witnessed Milos Raonic’s formidable serve, one being at 147mph, (the second fastest in Wimbledon history). Despite this serve, Murray went on to win the point!

With tie breaks in the second set, it was very nerve-racking and we were on the edge of our seats.

Murray was on fire, and we wondered how it was humanly possible to return the shots he was receiving.

We were of course delighted when he eventually defeated Raonic 6-4 7-6 7-6.

For us there was still excitement to come. As we left the court to make our way out, we arrived near the Wimbledon Balcony, where a crowd was waiting for the winner to appear. We were not disappointed, and managedto get plenty of shots of Andy.

If you haven’t joined Tilford and Rushmoor Tennis Club yet, don’t miss out. Next year you could be the lucky winner of these tickets (or one of the many other tickets that are drawn).

TRTC Smiths Bowl Mixed Doubles - 9th July

You do not have to go all the way to Wimbledon to watch some exciting tennis. The TRTC Smiths Bowl mixed doubles was contested on the day of the village fete and what a contest it was. It was between Ingrid and George Dziedzic and last years runners up Darrell Merrick-Wilson and Rory Caffyn-Parsons. The first game lasted 20 minutes with George and Ingrid finally winning a hard fought first set 6-3, with the swirling wind testing the players. Darrell and Rory stormed to a 5-1 lead in the second set but Ingrid and George kept their nerve and clawed their way back. George playing huge looping top spin ground strokes which were as tricky to play as pronounce his surname, he was a demon at the net too, smashing away great volleys. Ingrid was the calm consistent and precise player winning important points. This combination proved too much for Darrell and Rory to contend with and Ingrid and George were victorious winning 6-3, 7-5. Much to George's delight a third set was not needed, he had cricked his back that morning and played with much pain.

The crowd were royally entertained in a nail biting match, local celebrities watched from the “Royal Bank” over looking the court.

Tilford & Rushmoor Tennis Club welcomed all comers with a great offer of free tennis sponsored by the LTA as part of their Open Day celebrations. Fun and games for the youngest children started the proceedings off before some free coaching lessons gave them a taste of playing for real. Other activities included beginner's coaching for adults and a surprisingly large uptake for the very exciting cardio tennis sessions. The beautiful setting of the courts was bathed in sunlight for almost the entire afternoon and while some played others were able to relax and enjoy a pleasant picnic while soaking up the sun. There was a fully loaded cake stall with wonderful looking cakes donated by members, including some absolutely gorgeous ones looking just like tennis balls, they were very tasty! All club members were automatically entered into a prize draw which took place at the end of the afternoon and the lucky winner got a hamper full of goodies. There was also a raffle with some high quality prizes generously donated by local artists and businesses. The event was a great success, everyone had a great time and the club was able to welcome a number of new family and individual members who joined up on the day.

The days are getting longer and hopefully drier so it is time for you to dust off your tennis rackets! The Tilford & Rushmoor Tennis Club Committee have been busy putting together a fun schedule for the spring and summer:

We are starting off with an Open Day which is being held on Saturday 14th May. There will be a prize draw where people will be entered if they renew or take out membership any time up to and including the 14th May . Prizes to be announced in due course. Prime Tennis will also be there where they will be offering short free sessions of coaching for adults and children on the day.

Also in May we will be holding a Charity Tournament. This will be run on the same basis as the successful day we had back in 2013. The proceeds will be divided equally between TRTC and Phyliss Tuckwell. The tournament will be held on various private courts around the village as well as the TRTC Courts during the morning of 19th May. Once all the matches have been played everyone will meet up for a well earned lunch. More details to follow.

Following on from the inaugural Mixed Doubles Club Championships, in July 2015, the Club is now looking for players to take part in the 2016 event. All members are encouraged to take part and all standards are welcome. If members don't already have a doubles partner, then the team organising the event will partner you with another member who is also looking to take part. The deadline to apply is 31st March with first round matches taking place in April. The finals take place on Saturday 9 July (fete day). It is just £5 per member to take part.
