Club Mixed Doubles for the Smiths Rose Bowl

The finals this year were eagerly awaited because of the intriguing mix of the players, Ingrid Dziedzic and Colin Essex versus mother and son Polly and Hayden Davey. Ingrid is a previous winner of the tournament and a very strong lady player, Colin 76 years young and a grandfather of 6. Polly a tennis coach, Hayden age 11 and a Surrey tennis player, my money was on Polly and Hayden, because of the 65year age difference.

It was a perfect July day for tennis at the beautiful Tilford tennis courts. The pairs looked good in the warm up. I think Ingrid and Colin won the fashion stakes in their fetching matching Salmon coloured tops, both pairs were hitting the ball really well, their eye was in. The crowd waited in anticipation for the match to start, murmurs ran through the crowd

‘Gosh don’t Polly and Ingrid hit the ball hard’
‘I can’t play as well as Hayden and he is only 11!’
‘Will Colin last two sets, or even two games?’
‘Where’s the defibrillator, who know how to use it?'
‘Does Colin look like Mick Jagger or is his brother David Essex?’

The first set was much closer than the 60 score line to Ingrid and Colin suggested. There were long rallies, but the important points were won by Ingrid and Colin, Ingrid’s relentless with her ground strokes and Colin assuming the colour of his shirt defying age and gravity leaping Salmon like at the net swatting away any loose ball for great volley winners.

The battle intensified in the second set, Polly and Hayden started to get traction and win a few games, it was getting very serious out there. but Ingrid and Colin hardly put a foot wrong, blistering ground strokes from Ingrid, lightening reaction at the net from Colin. You could see the sheer determination on Colin’s face, within touching distance of winning he was not going to let this slip away and played like a man possessed and 40 years younger, they ran out winners 60, 63 in a very entertaining match.

The smile on Colin’s face beamed from ear to ear, it was the first trophy he has ever won, which is a great testimony to his tennis skill and fitness. Ingrid and Colin were worthy winners.
